he doors opened and the smoke poured out, followed by dozens of sweaty teens and twenty-somethings in baggy trousers, trainers and woolly hats. Their ears rang and the occasional whistle punctuated the air along with the sound of car doors and the occasional thump-thump-thump of a radio. The promoters quickly dismantled the speaker stack inside and started to load it onto the back of their truck as the ravers smoked cigarettes and bounced around rhythmically to music in their heads. The year is 1992. It's 1am on a Saturday night outside the legendary Shirehorse Inn in St Ives, and everyone's asking each other "Where's the phase 2?".
The lorry is loaded with speakers and the men get inside and honk the horn; car engines start to rev and prepare to follow. A line of Renaults, Fords and Vauxhalls create a snake of a convoy, following the truck to a secret location where the party will resume. Will it be on the moors? In a barn? Someone's house? No-one knows; but the feet are tapping away, itching to dance until sunrise.
